Xperia Play – How Good Is It?

February 19th, 2011

Since around the end of August 2010 there has been a lot of hubbub surrounding Sony Ericsson and a large number of rumors have surfaced concerning the potential combination of a gaming medium and a smartphone all based on an Android platform. It has been no secret that Google have been engineering their operating system to be better able to cope with games and this has made it the perfect operating system for Sony Ericsson to release their latest handset. As of March 2011, the Xperia Play, Playstation certified gaming smartphone will hit the shops.

What is quite obviously apparent now is that the Xperia Play has caused quite a stir in the smartphone world as it could be the start of something new, a new direction for smartphones and mobile gaming and also the development of other technologies, all depending on the success of the handset. However, Sony Ericsson is well aware of the failure of Nokia’s attempt to break open this sector with the N-Gage, which was ultimately poorly timed and inadequately supported. Things have changed a lot since then though, and with the continuously increasing success of downloadable applications and games for mobile formats, the timing for this kind of device may not get better.

Powering this machine is an important point to consider as with mobile gaming a strong foundation of hardware is needed before you even start optimizing games to be compatible. Luckily the Xperia Play looks like it will be able to compete with the top of the bunch in terms of frame rates and computing ability with its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and an embedded graphics processing unit made by the same company.

Aside from the gaming aspect, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play seems like a great phone. Running the latest version of Android, version 2.3, the navigational menus are well designed, everything seems easy to use and learn and there are very few bugs in the system. It also comes with a five megapixel camera that is surprisingly good, although unfortunately there is no support for high definition recording for videos.

To summarize, the Xperia Play is a very accomplished phone and an even better gaming platform. With its Playstation Certified credentials, it makes a worthy replacement for the Playstation Portable and even better, the games are much cheaper. There is not much on the market to compare it to but ultimately it seems that the Xperia Play may be the start of something big in terms of mobile gaming.

The Blackberry Storm 3 – Information & Advice

December 4th, 2010

Research in Motion has established itself as one of the cellular phone industry’s leading lights with the Blackberry handset. As many models of cell phones continue to assume the form of smartphones, the Blackberry has followed suit. With the Blackberry Storm 3, RIM presents a smartphone that the company hopes will continue to provide an answer, and an alternative, to the popular iPhone.

Early indications show that the Blackberry Storm 3 has stuck with the tried and true formula of the Storm 2. A completely touch version of a QWERTY keyboard is found on the Storm 3 and it seems to be not only sensitive but accurate. This should allay the fears of people who want to make the switch from the somewhat fragile sliding versions but are worried about errant key stroke reading. The actual screen on the handset is a 3.7” AMOLED capacitive touch screen. This is more than roomy enough for items to show up clearly.

Powering these features and functions is the Blackberry OS 6.0, customized for the Storm 3. When users surf the internet, the OS 6.0 operating system provides the engine for RIM’s Webkit web browser. Early reports are that the browser is a big improvement over its predecessor. 8 or 16 GB of storage offer enough storage for plenty of videos and photographs, within reason of course. The memory can be expanded up to 1GB RAM and 1GB ROM. Videos and photos are captured on a 5 megapixel camera with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels.

Also giving the Blackberry Storm 3 an advantage over the competition is the fact that it is a World Edition cell phone. The handset picks up 3G at hotspots with HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps. Blackberry Storm 3 connects via 802.11n WiFi. Bluetooth version 3.0 is found on the phone as is a Li-Ion battery. The battery offers about 9 hours of standby time while in 2G mode and approximately 5 hours while in 3G. For those looking for a couple of bells and whistles, a large number of ringtones in MP3 and WAV formats can be stored on the Storm 3.

RIM has taken what worked on the Blackberry Storm 2 and updated those things on the Storm 3. All of the features that customers look for are found on the Storm 3 and operate quite effortlessly. RIM continues to keep the bar high with this handset.

A Guide To The Blackberry Storm 3

November 15th, 2010

Strong market demands for full screen smartphones have convinced RIM to produce a Blackberry full screen smartphone that comes with a virtual keyboard instead of its trademark physical keyboard. The Blackberry Storm 3 is the name of their newest release and, as you would probably expect, it borrows heavily from its predecessor – the Storm 2.

The enhanced multimedia capabilities in the Storm 3 suggest that Blackberry might be edging slightly towards the multimedia market. However, the aesthetic look of the Storm 3 is pretty much similar to the Blackberry Storm 2. The curves at the edges of the smartphone work to bring out a trendy side of Blackberry that we have previously seen in the BB9700.

Blackberry fans will cheer when they find out that the new Blackberry Storm 3 comes with the Blackberry 6 OS that they have been looking forward to. The Storm 3 runs on a 1Ghz processor that will support the intensive demands of the 6 OS. Such demand can come from the Social Feed application. This application serves to provide mobile social networking capabilities to the Storm 3. Users are now able to view their RSS feeds, instant messages and FB/Twitter updates on a simple timeline. Aside from the social capabilities, there is another reason to celebrate – RIM has included a new web browser in the OS 6. This web browser accurately renders HTML websites, which solves a huge problem for most BB users.

The new interface on the Blackberry 6 OS comes with sleek visuals and a new set of lively icons. It is interesting that Blackberry cell phones (Storm 3 in particular) have the intention to discontinue their traditional look and replace it with a fresh and intuitive design that appeals to a younger audience.

At the back of the Blackberry Storm 3 is an 8-megapixel hi-resolution camera that provides images of excellent caliber. The snapped images look absolutely stunning on the vivid 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen. These additions to the Storm 3 represent a whole new level of multimedia engagement on Blackberry cell phones.

A majority of Storm 2 lovers are expected to rejoice, as one of the innovative features that Blackberry retains from the Storm 2 is the Surepress technology. Users are able to utilize the clickable touchscreen that effectively reduces the downsides of full touchscreen cell phones (accidental clicking).

With the bold changes that Blackberry implements in the Storm 3, it is natural for us to be of the opinion that Blackberry cell phones are capable of being fun and interesting without having to sacrifice their strong business functionality. That being said, the Blackberry Storm 3 is a well-balanced smartphone with a great combination of business and play.
