Advice On Buying A New Television

July 27th, 2010

Are you in the market for a new flat screen television? Maybe your old TV has finally stopped working or perhaps you just decided it is time to upgrade. The first thing you need to know is that flat screen TVs come in three different types: Plasma, LCD and LED. You may not be able to see much of a difference between the three from the outside (when not switched on), but inside they all work very differently.

LCD and Plasma TVs despite having a good picture quality often can not display black on the screen very well. This is because they both utilize a fluorescent lighting system to illuminate the screen. When the blacks are more of a grayish color it comes off to the human eye as fuzzy and unclear. This happens because the light sometimes just shows around the diodes within the tubes.

The liquid crystal diodes in the tubes are technically capable of producing an unlimited variety of color, however this often does not come through in LCD and Plasma televisions because the fluorescent lights themselves are not of high enough quality. A backlit LED TV is capable of a much wider and richer range of color, this is where LED style televisions have the edge over Plasma and LED.

LED televisions use less electricity than TVs that utilize a fluorescent lighting system, so this does make them less expensive in the long run. LED TVs have two different lighting arrangements: the aforementioned backlit method, and a set-up where the lights are placed along the edges of the screen itself. Both of these methods of lighting have their own pros and cons.

An edge-lit LED is much thinner than the backlit variety; however, they are still not capable of the same rich picture a backlit LED is. This is because, similar to fluorescent systems, the lights are constantly on which can muddle the image. Backlit LEDs are thicker overall, but they do produce a sharper, clearer image. For consumers that are concerned about getting the best possible viewing experience, this is the model to go for. There are many choices on the market today when it comes to flat screen televisions, whatever your needs or budget a little research into manufacturers, models and types can lead you to the perfect flat screen TV.

Fake Caller ID – Good Or Evil?

June 26th, 2010

Thieves do not just collect Social Security Numbers. They are also after your telephone records, date of birth and your bank and credit card account numbers. This information is a personal asset as well and people who illegally solicit this information are also known as pretexters. One of the main targets of this type of con is Medicare recipients.

The Medicare “spoofing” scam works by con artists calling seniors claiming to be Medicare representatives and informing seniors that there have been changes in the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act health care reform legislation. The person on the phone will claim that the new law requires personal and private information such as bank accounts and/or PIN numbers, and that the information will be necessary in order to ensure that their Medicare benefits remain in an “active” state.

Pretextors are usally very skilled at obtaining the information they need while making the conversation seem casual. When the pretexter (let’s just call it a thief) has the information they want, it is used to call your financial institution. The thief pretends to be you or someone with authorized access to your account. They might claim that they have forgotten their checkbook and need information about their account. Their overall goal is to empty an unsuspecting victim’s bank account and drain them of all available assets.

There have been opponents of laws allowing spoofing providers to exist since the advent of the service. Over the years, numerous organizations and individuals alike have exhausted all available means in order to attack the providers of caller ID spoofing . Certain individuals and organizations put forth claims of how threatening caller ID spoofing is. Opponents claim that scammers use it to gain personal information from people in order to commit fraud and other offences.

There is legislation in Congress to make caller ID spoofing a Federal offense. Here is the name of the legislation (the House version has already passed the House): S. 704: Truth in Caller ID Act of 2007. The law was introduced in the Senate on January 12, 2010. The bill passed the Senate and went to the House. The House changed the wording so that it would be illegal to fake caller ID with the intent to defraud or deceive.

The bill now sits in the Senate awaiting Senate approval of the House changes. Several companies have expressed concerns that the House version of the bill is too vague and leaves room for a multitude of lawsuits going forward. Those companies argue that some users of caller ID spoofing have legitimate purposes, employed by some VoIP services–like Google Voice–and by some organizations to replace the actual caller ID information with an alternate number could be considered “illegal” if the bill passes in its current form.

Touch Screen Technology – Providing The Solution To Many Day To Day Problems

June 21st, 2010

One of the simplest forms of personal computer communication that has been developed over recent years is the touch screen. Below are some examples of their uses in modern society:

Public Information Displays – One of the most common places to find a touch screen display is on public information systems such as tourism displays, trade show displays and information kiosks. The reason behind this is because of the ease of use a touch screen offers. It is less intimidating than other input devices, especially for novice users.

Retail Systems – Touchscreens can be utilized very effectively within the retail and restaurant sectors by improving the speed of transactions with customers. With a touch screen system such as a cash register, an order entry station or even seat reservation systems, employees can work much faster and the training of employees becomes simpler. With the size of the unit being much smaller than the equivalent data entry systems, counter space is also increased.

Customer Self-Service – It is a fact that nobody likes waiting in line or queuing for things, and it is a problem that can be overcome by using touch screens. Self-service touch screen terminals are being used to improve customer service at stores, restaurants and transportation hubs. ATMs and airline e-ticket terminals are other examples of self-service stations that often use touch screens. Customers can complete transactions themselves; saving them time and allowing them to get on with their day.

Computer Training – As touch screen interfaces are more user-friendly than other types of input devices, training time for computer novices can be significantly reduced. They also help to make the learning process more fun and interactive. Studies have shown that courses that involve large parts of touch screen computer training are more popular with students than courses which do not make use of the technology.

Assistive Technology – For some people, using a keyboard or mouse can be a challenging task. The touch screen input system makes it easier for these people to use computers in everyday life by incorporating on screen keyboards and other assistive technology in data input processes.

Industrial And Manufacturing – Within the last few years, the integration of touch screen systems into industrial parts and product manufacturing has increased dramatically. Because of the ease of use, the speed of data input and the simplified visual communication of options, touch screens offer an unparalleled alternative to older data input systems.

Just imagine that you have lost a button to your favorite suit or dress and there’s no time to purchase another. Is there a way to solve it? Once produced you sew it on and you are on your way. 3D printing is able to apply this rapid prototyping technology for the consumer and in a variety of applications. The technology for 3D printers is computer assisted design software instructing the printer to build a 3 dimensional model step by step until an exact reproduction is produced. Just think of the possibilities for consumers that 3D printers using rapid prototyping technology proposes, they are too vast to number.

3D Printing used for 3D Toys and Models. The use of 3D printing for making toys and models for the customer right in their home is only one of many applications of rapid prototyping technology. In this application the consumer would purchase or download a (CAD) software package for the toy they wanted to make and upload it into the hard-drive. One of many models of 3D printing could then begin to manufacture the toy or model for the consumer. Options such as customizing monograms or colors for the lucky recipient of the toy would be available to the customer. In a short period of time a customized toy would be ready for packaging, wrapping and gift giving. That special train or model car that you couldn’t locate for purchase could be produced by 3D printing and rapid prototyping technology. 3D printing would really open up a lot of alternatives for consumers if it comes to producing just the right toys or models.
